Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott completed her secondary school education as well as working two positions. Her goal was to be a teacher of English in a secondary school. She was unable to fulfill the dream after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. As a poet She began to sing in live poetry recitals. She later teamed with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was able to perform in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first signed artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
